 No.4202

In August, 1967, two freight trains collided at Shinjuku station, resulting in a fire that ate 72 tons of jet fuel, and an all-day shutdown.

The cause, IIUC, was driver distraction and slow braking action.

Those of you that have watched driver’s-eye videos from Japan, have very likely often heard a reminder of this incident, namely the tic-toc-tic-toc sound heard from the ATS ringing ‘upcoming stop’ until the train actually stops.

Not to be a troll or anything but…
72 tons is like one or two tank cars and…
hurr durr did it melt steel beams?

Really just one tank car.

A good average is 30 tons per empty car and 100 tons loaded. At least for hoppers and tanks. Autoracks and pigs are stupid light even while loaded. Like only 30-40 tons.

No, but it gave JFK autism on the moon. Having said that, I might be getting my crazies mixed up.
